• Showrooms and Exhibitors Report Strong Sales at
January 2005 Chicago Gift & Home Market

A healthy fourth quarter promoted new and robust order-writing in Chicago

The Chicago Gift & Home Market, which was held at The Merchandise Mart Jan 19-26, 2005, saw great attendance despite the snowiest January market in recent history.   Some exhibitors attribute market enthusiasm to the interactive relationship they shared with attending buyers who they characterized as educated on product lines.

Factoring the January weather into the equation, Mart management paid close attention to the comfort, relevance, and ease-of-use of the market for both buyers and exhibitors.   "We proved it again; Chicago is a city that works.   Despite the snow, our loyal buyers turned out--and bought.   The city got them to The Mart, and, once there, we made sure they were well taken care of, " said Joan Ulrich, vice president of leasing and marketing, Chicago Gift & Home Market.

Exhibitor Jacqueline Konopka, ower/artist, Chestnut Neck Primitives was impressed by the quality of the attendees.   "The buyers at the Chicago show are very educated.   They come knowing what they want.   They're interested in the background of your product and really listen to what you have to tell them.   They digest it and come back and place great orders," said Konopka.

Other major factors contributing to the success of the market were the expansion of the Market Suites temporaries and the refurbishing of the existing show floors.   To mark the debut of the expanded floors, a ribbon cutting, drinks and music provided the ambience for viewing the new spaces.   Both buyers and exhibitors agreed that the airy, open layout made it a great space to shop.   Buyers appreciated the ease of walking the floors,, including stairwells connecting the two exhibit floors.   Many commented that it is the easiest temporary venue in the country to shop.

Upcoming Chicago Gift & Home Market dates are:

Spring Chicago Gift & Home Market: March 19-21, 2005

July Chicago Gift & Home Market: July 20-27, 2005
